Mill Park Lakes, South Morang, Victoria

Popularly known as Mill Park Lakes, I think the area in question is more correctly named Hendersons Creek Wetlands. Its location is 210 The Lakes Boulevard, South Morang, in the City of Whittlesea. For visitors, there is a handy little car park in The Promenard at the north-west corner of the main lake. Many water birds congregate at the edge of the water here where they expect to be fed by people. I'm sure the food they receive is not always good for them, but they eat it anyway. They are also happy to pose for photos. Elsewhere in the wetland, the birds are not quite so obliging, but it's good to have a challenge. The aim is to photograph the bird without disturbing it; happy bird and happy human. The variety of species that can be found at the wetlands is astounding.

20 September 2014, visit by BirdLife Melbourne Photo Group

After visiting Tanunda Wetlands in the morning and Hawkstowe Park for lunch, our group spent the afternoon birding and photographing at Mill Park Lakes. A highlight was the large number of Freckled Duck. Two can be seen in the photo at the top of the page. To the right is a Black-winged Stilt (White-headed Stilt in the 9th edition of Pizzey and Knight 2012). I have more photos to add.
A list of birds recorded during the afternoon is at http://www.birdlifemelbourne.org.au/outings/site-lists/Mill%20Park%20Lakes.html
