Lysterfield Park is situated between Birdsland Reserve and Churchill National Park, approximately 30km south-east of Melbourne, Victoria. The southern part is in the suburb of Narre Warren North, and the rest is in Lysterfield. The park includes a variety of habitats that suit different wildlife species. BirdLife Melbourne visit 25 July 2015
For this month's BirdLife Melbourne Beginners Group outing to Lysterfield Lake, the weather remained fine, but oh so windy. Much of the time we were protected from the worst of it, but walking across the wall that dams the lake to the south was quite a struggle. More than one person lost their hat, but managed to retrieve them again. A flock of Australian White Ibis tried to fly into the wind south of the lake, but relative to the ground remained motionless and gave up. We recorded more than 40 bird species. As usual, the large group of birdwatchers spread out during the walk, so different people saw different birds. Many managed to see a male Mistletoebird, but only a few in the middle of the group saw a female Pink Robin. Spotted Pardalotes called frequently and were sometimes seen. Red Wattlebirds were everywhere. Few birds were on the lake, probably because it was so choppy in the wind, but those of us who stayed after lunch had good views of a Great Crested Grebe.
